Danish design brand HAY and visionary furniture company Herman Miller have announced an unprecedented collaboration. Coming together for the very first time and blending each brand’s artistry, the two have created a line of reinterpreted Eames mid-century classics which have proven to be revolutionary in their juxtaposition of timeless shapes and updated aesthetic.
This partnership marks a pivotal moment in HAY’s brand evolution since founders Rolf and Mette Hay have long admired the unique touch of Herman Miller and designers Charles and Ray Eames. “If I look at the entire Eames design portfolio, there’s nothing I don’t like. There’s always a clear concept, and there’s nothing I don’t understand,” Rolf Hay reflects. Herman Miller approached the Hays about the collaboration, as they felt merging both visions would make a lasting impact and yield more dynamic pieces.
The HAY x Herman Miller Collection includes eight items, all informed by practical design templates of the past, while refreshed with a touch of modernity. The Eameses’ experimental, almost whimsical, approach to design still plays a large role in the updated collection, but HAY assisted in reconfiguring the collection’s color palette. “Being very familiar with the existing color range, my intention was to focus on looking ahead, instead of looking too far back,” Mette Hay shared.
The range consists of seven lively hues, intended to be mixed and matched to one’s preferences. Tones of Toffee, Iron Red, and Powder Yellow are displayed throughout the assortment. While the colors of the furniture in this collection were updated, the textiles and materials employed were also given a modern revival. In past collections, the Eameses had worked closely with Alexander Girard, founding director of the textiles division at Herman Miller. He brought a sense of invigorating newness to every piece he touched, experimenting with offbeat color combinations and utilizing rich, diverse textures. A special-edition reupholstered Eames Sofa Compact in the Jacob’s Coat fabric from the ‘50s — a Girard textile — was also included in this collection, nodding to his influence.
This experimental attitude, combined with the Eameses pioneering of new materials, additionally led to the inclusion of many different, new materials such as cast-glass, 100% post-industrial recycled plastic, and more within the HAY x Herman Miller line.
The collection is available via HAY in North America and Herman Miller in North America, South America, Asia, Australia, and Africa starting September 21. Retail partners include the MoMA Design Store in the United States and Inform Interiors in Canada.
